Sysco Serves the United Nations With Sustainable Dishes

At these events Entergy representatives will be standing by to provide bill payment assistance and energy efficiency resources to help residential customers across the state.

Events were held recently in other areas of the state. Four upcoming are scheduled to serve residents in Central and Southeast Arkansas:

		</tr></tbody></table>The event at Watershed will have free fans available for customers (while supplies last) to help keep their homes cooler during Arkansas’ sweltering summer temperatures. It will also include opportunities to meet with local and state organizations to connect qualifying customers with other financial assistance. Among the groups scheduled to be at Watershed are:

<ul><li>Arkansas Department of Human Services can help with Medicaid and other social services.</li>
	<li>Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance will be available to help with WIC (Women, Infants and Children) and SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Program) benefits.</li>
	<li>Central Arkansas Development Council will be helping attendees through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program or LIHEAP which provides financial assistance for energy bills and other energy-related expenses.</li>
	<li>Legal Aid of Arkansas will be providing free legal services.</li>
</ul>Those attendees in need of financial assistance must have their social security card for verification purposes.

Additionally, Entergy offers several flexible payment options so customers can choose when, where and how they receive and pay their bills.

Fortunately, there are many opportunities to look after mental health, as well. Some ways are not only easy, but fun! No matter what, the tips below can help people take control of their recovery journey, both in terms of their physical health and their mental well-being.

Talk to a therapist or a licensed professional. Thoughts and feelings can be complicated following an accident or a diagnosis. Sharing them with a licensed professional can help untangle them and even smooth them out. Finding a new path after a life-changing medical event might be difficult at first, but a therapist could help pave the way.

Make sure to get plenty of quality sleep. Eight hours of shut-eye can have a positive impact on the body as well as the mind. Try establishing a routine, like going to bed at the same time each night and getting up at the same time in the morning. Get ready for sleep by turning down the lights, making the room cool and comfortable, and minimizing noise. Then prepare to count some sheep.

Connect with people, like family and friends, or others in the community. Reaching out to others isn’t always easy, but it can be beneficial to improving mental health. Send a text to a loved one — start a conversation or set up a time to grab lunch together. Or, if health permits, look into events that are happening nearby, like a festival or movie night.

Start a hobby or another relaxing activity. Taking personal time during a busy, stressful period in life can help maintain good mental health. Use that time to nurture a hobby or enjoy a calming activity, like crochet or yoga. Learning an entirely new hobby can also be a way to center the mind and focus on something fun.

This year, more than 1,000 employees around the world showed their generous spirit completing 117 volunteer projects. From distributing school bags to children or preparing and serving meals to supporting organizations like Habitat for Humanity, volunteers made a visible impact while reaffirming their commitment to service.

June was exciting, and there are many great stories to share. This article covers global initiatives only. 

Missing Maps Project

Franklin Templeton employees participated in the ninth annual Missing Maps project, a virtual global volunteer opportunity to map areas missing from maps, which helps disaster relief efforts. Franklin Templeton donated to Save the Children for each participant who logged at least 60 minutes of mapping in June.

Global CAN Competition

The annual food drive and CANstruction competition brought creativity and generosity together, with employees from nine locations collecting over 4,000 cans and other dry food items. Teams built sculptures from the donations, with Short Hills, NJ office winning the photo contest for their “Ben’s Diner” sculpture and Mexico City winning the video contest with their rendition of the Angel of Independence. Each winning team received a donation to a local charitable organization of choice.

The firm’s annual fitness charity challenge saw 305 employees from 79 teams log over 44 million steps to raise funds for a meaningful cause. Together we walked an incredible 44,487,794 steps—totaling approximately 21,064 miles (33,899 km). That is roughly the distance from New York City to Tokyo and back—twice! To honor the dedication of employees, Franklin Templeton donated to Save the Children in recognition of this achievement.

Freerice Challenge

Additionally, employees participated in the Freerice online trivia challenge, donating over 2.29 million grains of rice through the World Food Program.

Global Involved Day

Impact Days concluded on June 24 with Global Involved Day, where employees proudly wore their volunteer T-shirts to celebrate a month of meaningful service. From Poznan to Kuala Lumpur, the spirit of giving and community was evident across the globe.

Having previously coordinated relief efforts with ScottsMiracle-Gro in 2022, Aaron Thoms with Christian Appalachian Project (CAP), knew exactly who to call. “When Aaron reached out, I was hopeful we could help in some way,” said Katherine Dickens, director of ESG and social impact at ScottsMiracle-Gro. “We had history with the organization and the need was great.”

Unlike a typical disaster response that primarily focuses on food and water, flooding presents a unique challenge; the immediate need for fans and dehumidifiers to combat moisture and prevent mold growth. Fans and dehumidifiers are often in short supply after a flood, and relief agencies typically do not stock them. Because of this specific need, Hawthorne Gardening, a subsidiary of ScottsMiracle-Gro, was able to provide assistance.

“We were more than willing to again deliver dehumidifiers and fans to CAP,” says Alex Grossi, VP, supply chain and administration of Hawthorne Gardening. “We were in a somewhat unique position, as these aren’t items most organizations have on hand. Thankfully, we were able to provide them, when and where they were needed most.”

In total, 698 dehumidifiers have been distributed to affected families, with a policy of one fan or dehumidifier per family, no questions asked. “If you need help, we’re going to help you,” says Aaron. “We are grateful for partners that allow us to help our neighbors in their time of need. These critical supplies really have a huge impact following a disaster.”

Since 2022, ScottsMiracle-Gro has donated over 6 truckloads, or 90 pallets of fans and dehumidifiers to CAP, helping communities and families after flood events. “You see flood survivors that are emotionally torn up. These fans and dehumidifiers help them begin the long process of rebuilding,” says Aaron. “We are grateful to be able to deliver hope in the midst of turmoil.”

Budget constraints are a longstanding issue for community organizations. But for many, those challenges have intensified with recent changes in government funding.

Gina Sian, head of Regions Bank’s <a href="https://www.regions.com/about-regions/community-engagement/engaging-our-associates" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Making Life Better Institute</a>, recognizes the pressure this places on nonprofits and understands the hurdles leaders face.

For the past five years, the Regions Community Engagement team has been hosting the <a href="https://doingmoretoday.com/helping-nonprofits-tell-their-stories/" target="_blank">Important Insights for Community Organizations</a> webinar series that leverages Regions’ inhouse knowledge and experience to provide assistance where it’s needed most, at no cost.

Staff development is one area that kept bubbling up as Sian engaged with nonprofits about their challenges.

“‘No money, no mission’ is a phrase many nonprofits are familiar with,” Sian said. “But an even more critical factor to their success is their team. Engaging people who care about your mission, have the necessary skills to implement your vision, and the willingness to grow with your organization is not an easy task, most especially when you have limited resources.”

How can nonprofits support employee growth and performance without breaking the budget?

To answer this question, Sian assembled a group of Regions Learning and Development pros to share cost-effective strategies for employee training and development. Jinny Walker, Barry Ward and Ressie Chambers led the discussion, which included 71 attendees from 45 organizations in 39 cities.

Walker opened the meeting with a word-cloud exercise that gave participants an opportunity to share their specific challenges when it comes to employee and volunteer learning and development. To no one’s surprise, the responses highlighted issues around time, cost, technology, staffing and expertise.

With those challenges in mind, the obvious first question is where to start. Walker advised the audience to start with the basics.

“Think about your goals. Your organization’s priorities really shape the learning and development needs of your employees and volunteers,” Walker said. “Next, you should think about how to build a sustainable learning culture.”

Her advice for developing that internal learning strategy included:

<ul><li>Break learning into bite-sized chunks or micro learnings</li>
	<li>Leverage existing expertise within the organization</li>
	<li>Place a high value on learning</li>
	<li>Promote self-guided development</li>
	<li>Leverage a learning champion</li>
	<li>And last but not least – make it fun!</li>
</ul>She then passed the mic over to Ward, who provided readily available resources to execute that learning strategy.

“A lot of companies and organizations offer some really great free and low-cost learning resources – some available at the public library or online, others may be workshops or training offered by local community foundations,” Ward said. “And the topics may range from capacity building and fundraising to marketing and financial management. The key is picking the resources that best align with the needs of your organization.”

The next host, Ressie Chambers, wore two hats during the webinar, providing insight from two specialty areas. Along with serving as a Learning and Development professional at Regions, Chambers also is the executive director of a nonprofit in Memphis, Tenn.

She and her husband, Jimmy, established <a href="https://doingmoretoday.com/one-life-at-a-time/" target="_blank">Camp Chambers</a> more than a decade ago to provide educational and life skills for underserved youth. Theirs is a volunteer organization, with no paid staff, so Chambers has a great deal of experience with training and development for an unpaid workforce — as well as a board of directors — with diverse backgrounds, skills, ages and varied perceptions about roles and responsibilities.

Chambers shared some successful strategies that have worked for her in the past, especially when communicating the mission of the nonprofit:

<ul><li>Storytelling and real-life examples resonate deeply</li>
	<li>Interactive training is often more effective because it puts ideas into action</li>
	<li>Mentorship and peer support are important for knowledge transfer and skill development</li>
</ul>Chambers was honest about what has not worked as well, including one-size-fits-all training and programs that deliver “TMI” or too much information that overwhelms participants.

For this group of nonprofit leaders looking for tools and resources, Chambers had some specific, actionable advice. “Definitely start out with the resources that are no cost, there are tons of those out there,” she said.

“Encourage staff members and volunteers with certain skill sets to lead informal training sessions. People that are involved in nonprofits want to give back – they want things to do. Lunch and Learns are great forums. Also, network with other nonprofits to share best practices, and join the local chamber.”

Based on the comments and ideas springing up on the chat during the webinar, the audience was extremely engaged. Inspiring attendees to reflect, learn, share, and identify at least one action they can take is the most important goal of this quarterly webinar series.

Joan Wright, executive director of <a href="https://www.ccr-bhm.org/" id="modal-toggler-1978939314-3" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Childcare Resources</a> in Birmingham, has participated in past Insights webinars and found this one particularly relevant and helpful.

“The biggest takeaway for me was the variety of free resources that can support staff professional development across several areas and skills,” Wright said. “I appreciated the active chat conversations and sharing of resources from other participants.”

Wright added that the entire webinar series has been valuable to her and other members of her agency.

“I’ve learned new ways to approach our work, from <a href="https://doingmoretoday.com/helping-nonprofits-tell-their-stories/" target="_blank">data visualization</a> to staff development. The format of free, convenient, virtual sessions combined with quality, professional guidance provide an accessible way to gain insights, connect with others and apply new information to our work. I look forward to the next session!”

Investing in knowledge-sharing and skill-building opportunities is a win not only for community partners, but also for Regions associates who volunteer their time and expertise.

As the world pivots towards electrification, the demand for lithium-ion batteries is set to skyrocket. According to <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/automotive-and-assembly/our-insights/battery-2030-resilient-sustainable-and-circular" target="_blank">McKinsey, battery demand is expected to increase nearly sevenfold</a>, from approximately 700 GWh in 2022 to about 4,700 GWh by 2030. This surge is driven by the growing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), utility-scale grid storage, and portable electronics. However, the supply of raw lithium is struggling to keep pace, and production is expected to fall short of projected annual demand of 3 million tons by 2030. This looming supply gap presents a critical opportunity for innovation in lithium extraction.

Lithium is a key component in the global energy transition, boasting the highest energy density for a solid material, and making it the optimal choice for batteries. Since the introduction of the lithium-ion battery in 1991, its use has expanded exponentially, doubling every two to three years. However, the success of lithium-ion technology brings challenges in supplying enough raw materials to meet demand.

Lithium is mined worldwide from hard rock deposits and from underground brines. The highest concentration sources are being mined first, but many new reserves, such as the Smackover Formation in Arkansas or the Salton Sea in California, are low-concentration brines or geothermal fluids. As a result, the industry is turning to innovative methods to extract lithium from these non-traditional sources.

Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) is emerging as a viable solution to the challenges of lithium supply. DLE includes a family of techniques that chemically separate lithium ions from brines using sorbents, ion exchange, membranes, or electrochemical cells. According to <a href="https://www.idtechex.com/en/research-article/direct-lithium-extraction-from-brines-and-growing-ev-demand/32511" target="_blank">ID TechEx, DLE can deliver higher recovery rates, faster cycle times, and lower environmental impact</a> than conventional evaporation ponds. This makes DLE a necessary approach to unlock new lithium resources and reduce the impact of predicted global supply constraints.

U.S. Bank has launched a new online education platform called <a href="https://usbank.nextstreet.com/" target="_blank">U.S. Bank Business Resource Central</a> that provides educational courses and other tools to help small business owners run and grow their businesses. The platform, which is free, is designed to help U.S. Bank clients and non-clients, as well as small businesses that are suppliers to the bank.

The new resource hub aligns with a commitment at U.S. Bank to support small businesses, which are a driving force in the economy and a vital source of employment. As part of this effort, U.S. Bank offers <a href="https://www.usbank.com/business-banking/business-resource-center/diverse-business-resources/access-business.html" target="_blank">business access advisors</a> in more than a dozen markets around the country, helping small business owners get access to expertise, connections, and funding resources to fuel the growth of their businesses. The bank also has procurement specialists who help small businesses that may want to become vendors to the bank.

"Small businesses are vital to the U.S. economy," said Shruti Patel, chief product officer for business banking at U.S. Bank. "We aim to support them with access to capital and financial education. Our new private learning platform offers essential resources, and our team will work closely with business owners for any follow-up assistance."

The hub was created in collaboration with Next Street, a firm that provides training and other solutions for small businesses. Small businesses can create free accounts to access courses on topics such as “business continuity planning” and “how to prepare to seek financing.” There are also links to U.S. Bank resources such as product pages and <a href="https://www.usbank.com/financialiq.html" target="_blank">Financial IQ</a> articles.

“Small business suppliers often struggle with access to the right networks and getting good advice to help them succeed,” said Craig McKenney, chief procurement officer at U.S. Bank. “Now our business access advisors and procurement specialists can direct those small business suppliers to a private learning platform, which has resources to help them.”

In working with Next Street, U.S. Bank is collaborating with an organization that provides end-to-end solutions — from ecosystem assessments and strategies to resource platforms and accelerators — that propel small businesses in their communities and supply chains.
