At these events Entergy representatives will be standing by to provide bill payment assistance and energy efficiency resources to help residential customers across the state.

Events were held recently in other areas of the state. Four upcoming are scheduled to serve residents in Central and Southeast Arkansas:

		</tr></tbody></table>The event at Watershed will have free fans available for customers (while supplies last) to help keep their homes cooler during Arkansas’ sweltering summer temperatures. It will also include opportunities to meet with local and state organizations to connect qualifying customers with other financial assistance. Among the groups scheduled to be at Watershed are:

<ul><li>Arkansas Department of Human Services can help with Medicaid and other social services.</li>
	<li>Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance will be available to help with WIC (Women, Infants and Children) and SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Program) benefits.</li>
	<li>Central Arkansas Development Council will be helping attendees through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program or LIHEAP which provides financial assistance for energy bills and other energy-related expenses.</li>
	<li>Legal Aid of Arkansas will be providing free legal services.</li>
</ul>Those attendees in need of financial assistance must have their social security card for verification purposes.

Additionally, Entergy offers several flexible payment options so customers can choose when, where and how they receive and pay their bills.

Fortunately, there are many opportunities to look after mental health, as well. Some ways are not only easy, but fun! No matter what, the tips below can help people take control of their recovery journey, both in terms of their physical health and their mental well-being.

Talk to a therapist or a licensed professional. Thoughts and feelings can be complicated following an accident or a diagnosis. Sharing them with a licensed professional can help untangle them and even smooth them out. Finding a new path after a life-changing medical event might be difficult at first, but a therapist could help pave the way.

Make sure to get plenty of quality sleep. Eight hours of shut-eye can have a positive impact on the body as well as the mind. Try establishing a routine, like going to bed at the same time each night and getting up at the same time in the morning. Get ready for sleep by turning down the lights, making the room cool and comfortable, and minimizing noise. Then prepare to count some sheep.

Connect with people, like family and friends, or others in the community. Reaching out to others isn’t always easy, but it can be beneficial to improving mental health. Send a text to a loved one — start a conversation or set up a time to grab lunch together. Or, if health permits, look into events that are happening nearby, like a festival or movie night.

Start a hobby or another relaxing activity. Taking personal time during a busy, stressful period in life can help maintain good mental health. Use that time to nurture a hobby or enjoy a calming activity, like crochet or yoga. Learning an entirely new hobby can also be a way to center the mind and focus on something fun.

This year, more than 1,000 employees around the world showed their generous spirit completing 117 volunteer projects. From distributing school bags to children or preparing and serving meals to supporting organizations like Habitat for Humanity, volunteers made a visible impact while reaffirming their commitment to service.

June was exciting, and there are many great stories to share. This article covers global initiatives only. 

Missing Maps Project

Franklin Templeton employees participated in the ninth annual Missing Maps project, a virtual global volunteer opportunity to map areas missing from maps, which helps disaster relief efforts. Franklin Templeton donated to Save the Children for each participant who logged at least 60 minutes of mapping in June.

Global CAN Competition

The annual food drive and CANstruction competition brought creativity and generosity together, with employees from nine locations collecting over 4,000 cans and other dry food items. Teams built sculptures from the donations, with Short Hills, NJ office winning the photo contest for their “Ben’s Diner” sculpture and Mexico City winning the video contest with their rendition of the Angel of Independence. Each winning team received a donation to a local charitable organization of choice.

The firm’s annual fitness charity challenge saw 305 employees from 79 teams log over 44 million steps to raise funds for a meaningful cause. Together we walked an incredible 44,487,794 steps—totaling approximately 21,064 miles (33,899 km). That is roughly the distance from New York City to Tokyo and back—twice! To honor the dedication of employees, Franklin Templeton donated to Save the Children in recognition of this achievement.

Freerice Challenge

Additionally, employees participated in the Freerice online trivia challenge, donating over 2.29 million grains of rice through the World Food Program.

Global Involved Day

Impact Days concluded on June 24 with Global Involved Day, where employees proudly wore their volunteer T-shirts to celebrate a month of meaningful service. From Poznan to Kuala Lumpur, the spirit of giving and community was evident across the globe.

Having previously coordinated relief efforts with ScottsMiracle-Gro in 2022, Aaron Thoms with Christian Appalachian Project (CAP), knew exactly who to call. “When Aaron reached out, I was hopeful we could help in some way,” said Katherine Dickens, director of ESG and social impact at ScottsMiracle-Gro. “We had history with the organization and the need was great.”

Unlike a typical disaster response that primarily focuses on food and water, flooding presents a unique challenge; the immediate need for fans and dehumidifiers to combat moisture and prevent mold growth. Fans and dehumidifiers are often in short supply after a flood, and relief agencies typically do not stock them. Because of this specific need, Hawthorne Gardening, a subsidiary of ScottsMiracle-Gro, was able to provide assistance.

“We were more than willing to again deliver dehumidifiers and fans to CAP,” says Alex Grossi, VP, supply chain and administration of Hawthorne Gardening. “We were in a somewhat unique position, as these aren’t items most organizations have on hand. Thankfully, we were able to provide them, when and where they were needed most.”

In total, 698 dehumidifiers have been distributed to affected families, with a policy of one fan or dehumidifier per family, no questions asked. “If you need help, we’re going to help you,” says Aaron. “We are grateful for partners that allow us to help our neighbors in their time of need. These critical supplies really have a huge impact following a disaster.”

Since 2022, ScottsMiracle-Gro has donated over 6 truckloads, or 90 pallets of fans and dehumidifiers to CAP, helping communities and families after flood events. “You see flood survivors that are emotionally torn up. These fans and dehumidifiers help them begin the long process of rebuilding,” says Aaron. “We are grateful to be able to deliver hope in the midst of turmoil.”

When Abigail Thompson joined Foreign Language Academy in Kansas City, Missouri, as the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools Coach, she made it her personal mission to inspire teachers and students with technology and share ways that classroom tech could reshape learning.

“I had already been a teacher in Kansas City Public Schools, and I was really interested in technology and how it’s best used in the classroom,” Thompson says. “I like that I still get to work with kids in some capacity, but I love that I get to help other teachers be great.”

In her role, Thompson has helped teachers successfully implement lesson plans from <a href="https://www.verizon.com/learning?cid=gyrate0265" target="_blank">Verizon Innovative Learning HQ</a>, which offers free to all educators more than 450 tech-based lessons, created by partners like McGraw Hill, Discovery Education and Arizona State University. The lesson plans cover subjects from game design to biology and beyond.

But because the lesson plans on Verizon Innovative Learning HQ lay out exactly what is needed for each course of study, Thompson says she easily finds smart substitutions. “Exploring what tools we have and can utilize instead has been big for us,” she says.

One of the most popular Verizon Innovative Learning HQ resources at Thompson’s school, for example, is the <a href="https://www.verizon.com/learning/lesson-plans/lessons/StopMotion-Animation/575?cid=gyrate0265" target="_blank">Stop-Motion Animation</a> lesson, which gives students a fun, hands-on way to be creative while learning core STEM principles. The lesson plan recommends using the Stop Motion Studio app, but Thompson found a substitute app already available on school tablets with the same capabilities.

Photo credit: Nicole Bissey</figcaption></figure>Students find the technology both easy-to-use and engaging. “After I take all the pictures, I go to the app where you can edit and add effects,” says fifth grader Gabriela. “I feel like I’m learning when I use it. You’re expanding your brain to learn about editing photography and video together.” The lesson also teaches physics (understanding motion and gravity), engineering (designing sets and props) and math (measuring time and frame rates).

Thompson said another lesson plan that’s a favorite across all grades levels is <a href="https://www.verizon.com/learning/lesson-plans/lessons/Emoji-Design/375?cid=gyrate0265" target="_blank">Emoji Design</a>, which recommends using a graphic design software program that the school doesn’t own. Thompson identified five alternate applications that worked with the material, however, giving students several options for creating their designs.

The resulting emojis are as different as the students are. Kevin, a sixth grader, made a sports-themed emoji to symbolize his love of soccer and basketball; eighth grader Maria Jose taught herself how to create a gradient background to use in her design.

You can’t do that in other classes.” Photo credit: Nicole Bissey</figcaption></figure>The flexibility of the lesson plans on Verizon Innovative Learning HQ brings creative energy to the classroom, giving students the freedom to explore and innovate during lessons, which in turn builds their confidence. For some lesson plans, the students can choose which tools they will use to complete their work, and students will make selections based on their own interests and comfort level. “One of the kids got so excited about [a popular music production app],” says Thompson. “He said, ‘I’m really good at keeping beats, so I’m working in percussion.’ I just love that.”

Having agency and authorship of their learning experience gives the students the confidence to develop new skills. “Using technology for creation rather than consumption in the classroom is so important,” Thompson says. "It helps students see technology as a tool and gives them so many options to show who they are and what they know. Creating choice has given voice to the students. It helps them gain both knowledge and confidence, so I just think that’s awesome."

The students think it’s awesome, too. “We integrate our own ideas into our work,” says Gabriel, a seventh grader.

Leo, also in seventh grade, puts it more simply: “The lessons are more fun.”

Tim Nash, a STEM and robotics teacher, says that his students are repurposing skills they learned in the Verizon Innovative Learning HQ lessons and bringing them to other subjects. “We have a journalism class that does weekly video announcements using [readily available video production apps],” Nash says. “It’s something new that we’re doing, because the kids now know how to use the tools in ways that can be implemented outside of the classroom.”

And, as Nash points out, it’s “pretty cool” that middle-school students are stepping into these kinds of roles, inspired to branch out and apply what they’ve learned in real-life scenarios.

For her colleagues, meanwhile, Thompson fosters ongoing creative usage of Verizon Innovative Learning HQ lessons at the school by sharing resources, lesson examples and project ideas with teachers, partly through a monthly newsletter and partly through one-to-one calls with her co-workers. And just like their students, the teachers are taking the ball and running with it, with creative and engaging results. “The teachers see the resources and take them and they make them their own,” she says.

Behind the scenes: How FedEx helps keep the Flying Eye Hospital in the sky

While the Flying Eye Hospital is known around the world for delivering cutting-edge eye care and training, the magic behind the mission starts long before the first patient is seen. It takes a dedicated network of people, months of planning, and round-the-clock technical support to ensure that every Orbis mission takes off smoothly—and safely. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at the essential work being done to keep the plane mission-ready for 2025 and beyond, all thanks to FedEx and other key partners.

FedEx serves as Orbis’s approved Part 142 training center, playing a vital role in maintaining the proficiency and currency of our volunteer flight crew.

Each April, Orbis pilots—comprised entirely of retired or active FedEx pilots—gather at FedEx headquarters in Memphis, TN, for comprehensive annual training. This includes MD-10 simulator sessions, classroom instruction, international mission planning, and emergency equipment training, all designed to ensure they remain proficient and mission-ready to deliver sight-saving care around the world.

Throughout the year, pilots stay current by completing four-hour simulator events, which include Initial and Recurrent Proficiency Checks (IPC and PC), warm-up sessions, and "3 and 3s" — training flights designed to meet FAA landing currency requirements. These simulator events are made possible through close coordination between the FedEx training schedulers and the Orbis training office, who work together to plan and schedule training, assign instructors, and provide evaluators as needed.

Most instructors and all evaluators are active FedEx pilots, who often accommodate Orbis simulator events around their regular flying schedules. This collaborative effort ensures our flight crews maintain the highest standards of safety, skill, and preparedness for every project. We can’t thank FedEx enough for sharing their equipment, expertise, and manpower to help get our aircraft to where it’s needed.

The FedEx team in Clark, Philippines (CRK) plays a vital role in supporting the Flying Eye Hospital and ensuring our aircraft remains mission ready. Their cross-departmental collaboration—spanning Aircraft Maintenance, Ramp Office, Customer Service, Customs Clearance, Security, and offices of the Sr. Manager and Managing Director—provides us with seamless, day-to-day support during each visit.

From transportation to and from the aircraft parking location to providing GPU, air conditioning units, lift trucks, maintenance stands, loaders, and even flight crew catering, the CRK team steps in with enthusiasm and warmth.

FedEx receives all Orbis medical supplies at Clark and clears them through their freeport to help keep costs down. FedEx even helped move the plane to a different part of the airport recently when our staff weren’t available.

FedEx employees, are, simply put, an extension of the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital team. Each arrival and departure are met with smiles, hugs, and genuine curiosity about our programs and the people we serve. We are deeply grateful for their commitment—and they should be proud of the role they play helping people around the world access improved eye care.

While the plane is parked between projects in Clark, Philippines, the Orbis maintenance team conducts a variety of monthly system checks. These include engine runs, tire pressure checks, filter changes, and evaluations of Ground Support Equipment (GSE) to ensure the aircraft remains ready for takeoff at a moment’s notice.

Looking ahead, maintenance planning is underway for the Summer 2025 A Check, which will be conducted by the Orbis maintenance team with support from FedEx. Additionally, early preparations have already begun for the 2026 C Check, including the logistics of securing a maintenance location and sourcing parts and materials. FedEx supplies the majority of the parts for these checks and makes a considerable contribution toward the cost of the maintenance checks each year.

The project teams are working hard conducting airport assessments along with logistical and program planning visits for the 2026 Flying Eye Hospital projects. In March 2025, members of the team traveled to Peru for an initial assessment and planning visit to prepare for a three-week project scheduled for April 2026. In June, similar initial planning visits are scheduled for a planned two-week Macau project and three-week Vietnam project in 2026. These initial planning visits serve to introduce Orbis and the Flying Eye Hospital to government officials and local leaders, assess host hospitals and airports for project structure and feasibility, and design clinical training plans tailored to meet partner and participant needs.

Medical equipment maintenance:

Of course, the plane is primarily an ophthalmic teaching facility – and while it takes a lot to keep the plane in the air, there’s also a lot of work required to make sure its state-of-the-art medical equipment functions correctly.

Just like the aviation components, all medical equipment on the plane is subject to periodic maintenance to comply with regulations, performed this time by the biomedical engineering staff, the manufacturer, or a third party. This helps ensure efficiency, operational reliability and long-term cost savings, but most importantly, it keeps the patients safe.

It really does take a village to ensure this plane continues to travel the world, sharing world-class ophthalmic training with local teams. Thanks to all those who contribute to the maintenance of the plane, but especially to FedEx, who puts the “flying” in “Flying Eye Hospital”.
