Foreign Language Academy in Kansas City builds student confidence through adaptable, tech-forward lesson plans.

When Abigail Thompson joined Foreign Language Academy in Kansas City, Missouri, as the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools Coach, she made it her personal mission to inspire teachers and students with technology and share ways that classroom tech could reshape learning.

“I had already been a teacher in Kansas City Public Schools, and I was really interested in technology and how it’s best used in the classroom,” Thompson says. “I like that I still get to work with kids in some capacity, but I love that I get to help other teachers be great.”

In her role, Thompson has helped teachers successfully implement lesson plans from <a href="https://www.verizon.com/learning?cid=gyrate0265" target="_blank">Verizon Innovative Learning HQ</a>, which offers free to all educators more than 450 tech-based lessons, created by partners like McGraw Hill, Discovery Education and Arizona State University. The lesson plans cover subjects from game design to biology and beyond.

Photo credit: Nicole Bissey</figcaption></figure>Occasionally, Thompson finds an appealing lesson plan that suggests using a tool or app that the school doesn’t have. “The reality is maybe we don’t always have that exact resource,” she says. But because the lesson plans on Verizon Innovative Learning HQ lay out exactly what is needed for each course of study, Thompson says she easily finds smart substitutions. “Exploring what tools we have and can utilize instead has been big for us,” she says.

One of the most popular Verizon Innovative Learning HQ resources at Thompson’s school, for example, is the <a href="https://www.verizon.com/learning/lesson-plans/lessons/StopMotion-Animation/575?cid=gyrate0265" target="_blank">Stop-Motion Animation</a> lesson, which gives students a fun, hands-on way to be creative while learning core STEM principles. The lesson plan recommends using the Stop Motion Studio app, but Thompson found a substitute app already available on school tablets with the same capabilities.

Photo credit: Nicole Bissey</figcaption></figure>Students find the technology both easy-to-use and engaging. “After I take all the pictures, I go to the app where you can edit and add effects,” says fifth grader Gabriela. “I feel like I’m learning when I use it. You’re expanding your brain to learn about editing photography and video together.” The lesson also teaches physics (understanding motion and gravity), engineering (designing sets and props) and math (measuring time and frame rates).

Thompson said another lesson plan that’s a favorite across all grades levels is <a href="https://www.verizon.com/learning/lesson-plans/lessons/Emoji-Design/375?cid=gyrate0265" target="_blank">Emoji Design</a>, which recommends using a graphic design software program that the school doesn’t own. Thompson identified five alternate applications that worked with the material, however, giving students several options for creating their designs.

The resulting emojis are as different as the students are. Kevin, a sixth grader, made a sports-themed emoji to symbolize his love of soccer and basketball; eighth grader Maria Jose taught herself how to create a gradient background to use in her design.

You can’t do that in other classes.” Photo credit: Nicole Bissey</figcaption></figure>The flexibility of the lesson plans on Verizon Innovative Learning HQ brings creative energy to the classroom, giving students the freedom to explore and innovate during lessons, which in turn builds their confidence. For some lesson plans, the students can choose which tools they will use to complete their work, and students will make selections based on their own interests and comfort level. “One of the kids got so excited about [a popular music production app],” says Thompson. “He said, ‘I’m really good at keeping beats, so I’m working in percussion.’ I just love that.”

Having agency and authorship of their learning experience gives the students the confidence to develop new skills. “Using technology for creation rather than consumption in the classroom is so important,” Thompson says. "It helps students see technology as a tool and gives them so many options to show who they are and what they know. Creating choice has given voice to the students. It helps them gain both knowledge and confidence, so I just think that’s awesome."

The students think it’s awesome, too. “We integrate our own ideas into our work,” says Gabriel, a seventh grader.

Leo, also in seventh grade, puts it more simply: “The lessons are more fun.”

Tim Nash, a STEM and robotics teacher, says that his students are repurposing skills they learned in the Verizon Innovative Learning HQ lessons and bringing them to other subjects. “We have a journalism class that does weekly video announcements using [readily available video production apps],” Nash says. “It’s something new that we’re doing, because the kids now know how to use the tools in ways that can be implemented outside of the classroom.”

And, as Nash points out, it’s “pretty cool” that middle-school students are stepping into these kinds of roles, inspired to branch out and apply what they’ve learned in real-life scenarios.

For her colleagues, meanwhile, Thompson fosters ongoing creative usage of Verizon Innovative Learning HQ lessons at the school by sharing resources, lesson examples and project ideas with teachers, partly through a monthly newsletter and partly through one-to-one calls with her co-workers. And just like their students, the teachers are taking the ball and running with it, with creative and engaging results. “The teachers see the resources and take them and they make them their own,” she says.

Calm Canvas captures the 2025 Global Possibilities Award Presented by FedEx

<a href="https://www.calmcanvasja.com/" target="_blank">Calm Canvas</a>, a team of seven from Hoover High School in North Canton, Ohio, has a simple mission: to create a movement that empowers individuals to take proactive steps toward emotional resilience and self-care.

Each year, more than 800,000 people die by suicide, with stress and anxiety being significant contributing factors, especially among teens and young adults. Calm Canvas is determined to change this.

To do this, the team created Calm Canvas, a unique paint-by-number experience designed to promote emotional well-being. Each color is paired with a specific coping strategy, such as deep breathing, gratitude listing, and self-reflection, among others, all important techniques for managing stress and anxiety.

What separates Calm Canvas from many other JA companies is that they created and assembled the products by hand. From the COO and resident artist <a href="https://www.calmcanvasja.com/team/peyton-craig" target="_blank">Peyton Craig | Calm Canvas</a> drawing the designs for the canvas, to printing the designs on the canvas, all steps in the process were done in-house.

The team adeptly handled partnerships, community collaborations, and marketing to raise awareness of its mission and product. Through its marketing efforts, Calm Canvas reached audiences in more than 25 different countries, with their social media content amassing over 25 million views worldwide.

The team strives to make a difference in mental health awareness and support by donating a portion of their proceeds to local organizations that promote mental health education, provide resources for emotional well-being, and support individuals navigating life’s challenges. DP World Marks a Decade of Community Resilience and Sustainable Impact

Throughout the month of April, Nielsen employees celebrated Global Volunteer Month with volunteering and environmental activities, culminating with our twelfth annual Earth Day call-to-action on April 24th, 2025.

For the second year in a row, Global Volunteer Month provided an ongoing opportunity for Nielsen to achieve together through community engagement. All employees have 24 hours of annual volunteer time to participate in volunteering events with nonprofit and non-governmental organizations throughout the year, and many Nielsen employees took advantage of this benefit in April.

Our people volunteered at the Mumbai and Bangalore offices to make seedballs for planting in local forests, participated in river and beach cleanups in Warsaw and the Tampa Bay area, learned to make recycled watering pots in Mexico City, virtually gathered from around the world to learn about zero waste cooking and to reduce our digital trash footprints, and much more.

One of the leaders shared:

“Volunteering unites us around a common goal and powers team-building for our people,” shared Ana Lucía Álvarez Parra, Team Lead for Rich Media LatAm and Cares BRG Leader in Mexico. “It also offers our people opportunities to take on leadership roles. And it’s a fun and rewarding way to break up our regular work routines while creating a shared sense of pride and connection to our community and the Nielsen organization.”

We have invested more than $100 billion in critical American energy infrastructure over the last decade and plan to invest $190 billion more over the next decade. We are upgrading our current generation fleet to get more electricity from existing resources on the grid quickly, actively building new generation to support AI energy demand, and have more construction planned, which will bring an additional approximately 14 gigawatts on line through 2030, enough energy to power more than 10 million homes, while simultaneously upgrading hundreds of thousands of miles of power lines to deliver energy more reliably and efficiently. Nuclear energy is core to America’s energy future, and as the largest regulated operator, we have the knowhow and plans to keep our nuclear plants operating safely for decades to come. In addition to extending the life of our nuclear plants, we are pursuing ongoing projects to add over 1 gigawatt of capacity to our existing natural gas, nuclear and hydro fleets. We’re adding new advanced, efficient natural gas to provide always-on power to serve some of the fastest growing regions in the country. We also offer innovative options to help customers reduce their bills and make their homes more efficient while protecting grid reliability.

We are broadening our strategic engagements to power today and grow for tomorrow. We have the expertise, relationships, and capacity to position ourselves for long-term success. Earlier this year, we announced an innovative partnership with GE Vernova enabling us to procure up to 19 American-produced natural gas turbines. This ensures we can meet our customers’ growing and evolving energy needs driven by economic development and AI growth today and into the future. Our scale helps us secure these critical supplies while maintaining flexibility to deploy them as needs arise. After considering sites in 40-plus states, last month, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced a $10 billion investment in North Carolina to expand its AI infrastructure and support cloud computing technologies. By aligning with pivotal partners and delivering with speed, we’ve helped successfully position North Carolina – as we’re doing across all our service territories – as a top place to do business. We are open for business and uniquely positioned to shape our industry’s future as we operate in some of the most attractive jurisdictions in the country.

We’re shaping and leading the path forward for energy dominance – all the while keeping energy reliable and prices as low as possible for our customers. We are working every day in close collaboration with stakeholders, customers, local, state, and federal officials to help our nation become the global leader in AI and manufacturing. To that end, we applaud Congress and the administration for advancing energy policies in the One Big Beautiful Bill that both benefit our customers and accelerate progress toward our national goals, including credits for existing and new nuclear and energy storage. 

Reliable, affordable, and abundant energy is the bedrock upon which American AI innovation, deployment, and dominance will be built, and we are ready, willing, and able to help the United States meet its goals of energy dominance and American AI leadership.
