Cleanup, repairs from deadly train crash could continue into next week
The cleanup effort and repairs from Tuesday's triple fatal Long Island Rail Road train collision in Westbury could last into next week, but the LIRR has some plans in place to help commuters get around.
MTA President Phillip Eng says 12 rush-hour trains on the main line were canceled Wednesday evening. But he says four trains were added on the Babylon branch to help accommodate commuters.
Berkeys Paz, of East Islip, usually takes the Ronkonkoma line but used the Babylon line Wednesday to get to work about 45 minutes late.
Eng says one challenge faced by repair crews is that one of the tracks rolled sideways. He says that's making the re-railing particularly difficult. He wouldn't say when he expects service to be fully restored.
Buses are running in Huntington, Ronkonkoma and Babylon. Eng says the affected municipalities have lifted the restrictions of their parking lots until service is fully restored.
