Flooding frustrations are mounting in Island Park more than six years after Superstorm Sandy devastated the village.
Community members on California Place South and in the area of Barnum Island say they still deal with flooding when there's heavy rain or at high tide. They say they've called on the village and town to fix the roads and improve drainage in the area, but all they say they've received are studies and broken promises.
Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen says state money to help fix town roads was allocated before she took office. She was unsure about why the project hasn't started yet, but she says the design phase is already underway.
In the village portion of Island Park, Mayor Mike McGinty says they are in the second phase of a $40 million drainage project to fix the flooding. As for why it's taken so long, the mayor blames constant delays in getting federal dollars to pay for it.
The Town of Hempstead says the project is slated to begin this fall. Island Park officials say the village work is expected to start in a year.
Residents say they need the work done before the next big storm hits.
