An East End farmer is the first on the Island to grow and produce CBD, or cannabidiol, products made from marijuana plants.

David Falkowski's family has been farming on the South Fork for decades. Now, he's branched out into something new.

"I'm a New York state-licensed hemp grower and processor," he says.

Falkowski recently opened a shop in Sag Harbor where he sells CBD products. They're made with a non-intoxicating compound of cannabis. He says many of his customers use them for pain relief or to alleviate anxiety.

The products are not FDA-approved, and some doctors say there shouldn't be a rush to buy them.

Dr. Mary Andriola, director of children's neurology at Stony Brook Hospital, says there have been no long-term studies on the use of CBD. But she does prescribe what was the first FDA-approved drug derived from marijuana, which has been found to help people who have epileptic seizures.

Medical marijuana is already legal in New York, and state legislators are currently debating whether to make its recreational use legal as well. And while no one is saying that marijuana farms will suddenly start appearing across the East End, some believe it could become a niche to help the struggling farming industry.

Other CBD products, like lotions, balms and gel caps, are becoming popular in stores.
