Police say a man was found stabbed to death in Hempstead early Friday morning.
According to detectives, police responded to a call of a stabbing victim on Clinton Street. Police say an unidentified Hispanic man in his 20s or early 30s was stabbed in Brierley Park and was found lying in the parking lot of Laundry Palace.
Employees at the laundromat saw the victim and called 911. The victim was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The murder came just hours after officials held a news conference to announce their ongoing "Hempstead Initiative," where Nassau County police and federal law enforcement officers are assisting Hempstead police to crack down on gangs, drugs and violence.
"Over the 14 days, we had 100 arrests, 25 known gang members were arrested and taken off the street," said Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder.
He says that in spite of the murder, they will continue to work to keep crime down in Hempstead.
Police say this murder is not gang related. They are reviewing surveillance video from the Laundry Palace and are still working to identify the victim.
Eddie Blocker, a homeless man who lives in Brierley Park, says he heard another homeless man get into a fight with someone over a bottle of liquor.
Detectives ask anyone with information to contact the Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
