Nine New Rochelle students won awards at the International Genius Olympiad last week at SUNY Oswego.
The Westchester teens joined 1,400 other students to display their yearlong research projects in front of judges.
Jake Egelberg researched how bacterial protein and RNA strands interact in diseases such as breast cancer. He says he was inspired by his grandma, who died from the disease.
"That made me want to look into how breast cancer is formed in the first place and look for some sort of cure," Egelberg said.
His efforts earned him a gold medal, and every other New Rochelle student won either a medal or received honorable mention.
Every student who received a gold medal also took home a Kindle.
While the recognition is appreciated, the young scientists expect their work will eventually make a difference.
"I certainly think what we do now--the research we are doing will impact the future," Egelberg said.
Egelberg also says the program has inspired him to continue with research in college.
