Thursday is National HIV Testing Day and a Stratford doctor who has made a difference here in the United States is taking his expertise overseas.
As the world celebrates Pride month, the LGBTQ community is still fighting discrimination in countries like Zimbabwe.
Dr. Gary Blick, a local HIV expert, has opened a clinic in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. He is also counseling gay men there.
"To get people, not only tested, but to get people aware of prevention of HIV and to help fight the stigma and discrimination associated with it being part of that bisexual community, as well as the HIV-positive community," Blick said.
Blick says he sees one to two new HIV-positive people coming in each month, and many of them are young. He says that's especially true in the African American and Hispanic communities. HIV is hitting its highest rate ever in the transgender community, according to Blick.
Blick says education is important, and says if some African nations can accept the LGBTQ community, Zimbabwe can't be far behind.
