Immigration advocates are warning that an expansion of the public charge rule could put millions of undocumented immigrants at risk.

Nick Gulotte, of the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, says the change would make it harder for immigrants who use public benefits to get a green card.

"Clearly the intention of the policy is to create a chilling effect to really scare immigrant New Yorkers and immigrants more broadly from using public assistants," Gulotte says.

Officials are now attempting to put the rule change on hold.

The new public charge rule is set to take effect Oct. 15.

New York State Attorney General Letitia James has announced a lawsuit against the Trump administration that she hopes will push back the start date.

Officials at the Mayor's Office of Immigration Affairs and volunteers are reminding immigrants to "know your rights" ahead of the possible rule change.
