Students at one Yonkers school received free backpacks packed with supplies ahead of the school year.
Local officials partnered with School 22 on Nepperhan Avenue to give the students free bags filled with supplies.
The event was in part to honor the memory of Jonathan Maldonado, a former Yonkers school aide and the nephew of City Council President Michael Khader - who hosted the event.
At 21, Maldonado died in November 2017 after a confrontation with Greenburgh police. The state attorney general's office is investigating the incident.

"He made a great impact in the short amount of time that he had worked with students at PEARLS Hawthorne School. He touched many lives and I'm sure that he's loving we're doing something like this,” said Maldonado’s mother, Nancy Maldonado.
Approximately 150 backpacks filled with supplies were given to the children.
This is the second year in a row the giveaway was held.
The kids will get to flex with their new backpacks when school reopens on Sept. 5.
