Officials with the Nassau County Police Department were in Mineola Thursday morning to outline how they plan to keep students safe this school year.
Nassau County police say they worked with every school in the county to assess security and create action plans in case of an active shooter situation.
They say new safety efforts include new training protocols in the case of an active shooter and the implementation of the RAVE app – a panic button that delivers data to 911 dispatchers. Officials say most schools also have connected security cameras to police command centers.
Nassau County police say that this year, every patrol officer will visit a school in their sector once a day.
"There are 177 cars on patrol, they'll go out, stop in a park, walk and talk situation, spend five or six minutes saying hello. So when that incident occurs, they know who the superintendent is, who the security guard is, where the rooms are, such as the cafeteria, the library, in case they need to go in and initiate an active shooter situation," says Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder.
Nassau County police say officers will have some new equipment to their cars, including a new door-breaching tool and special tourniquets.
Some parents say they are pleased with the level of security, and like the idea of having Nassau police visit daily.
"I love the idea that they will have police officers here at every school, especially with what's going on in our country," says Savannah Shamlian, of Mineola.
