Community members are rallying around the memory of a man who was beaten to death after a homeowner says he attempted to break in to his Williamsbridge home.
Harold Bates was found bludgeoned to death with a metal pipe on Sept. 20 after he was chased down the street by homeowner Troy George.
George claims Bates was attempting to break into his home on East 233rd Street and Barnes Avenue. This is a claim Bates' family finds hard to believe.
The community gathered around Celinda Bates Monday as she grieved her son, who was also well-known as "Muddy."
Celinda Bates says her son commuted from Mount Vernon to Manhattan to work at a homeless shelter and was loved by everyone in the community.
"He just made two years at his job, I was so proud of him," said Celinda Bates.
Troy George was arrested and charged with murder. George is expected back in court on Nov. 18.
The community is set to gather for a memorial on Wednesday and a funeral on Thursday as they await that day in court.
