The Avenue of Heroes, which is part of a museum that's dedicated to the Navy Seals and named for a fallen hero from Patchogue, was officially unveiled Tuesday in West Sayville.
The avenue lines the walkway to the Navy Seal Museum and Sea Cadet Training Facility that bears the name of Lt. Michael P. Murphy. Twenty red maple trees line the avenue. Each tree is dedicated to a Navy Seal or Army Night Stalker who was part of Operation Red Wings.
The Navy Seal Museum and Sea Cadet Training Facility is the first museum in the northeast dedicated to honoring Navy Seals.
Some of the people honored are Bronze Star recipients Daniel Healy, Shane Patton and Murphy.
"I'm just overwhelmed," says Murphy's mom, Maureen Murphy.
Maureen Murphy says she is thrilled that the facility will serve as a place to celebrate the heroes and educate the community.
"I know that classes will come and I think it's a good idea to let young kids know and people that don't understand that we're living like this because of these men and what a way to honor them," says Murphy.
The museum and facility are slated to open May 7, which would have been Lt. Murphy's 44th birthday. The exhibits will take visitors through various periods of conflict.
Vince Calvosa, director of construction, says exhibits will include World War II, Vietnam, the global war on terror and Operation Red Wings. He says the exhibit halls have digital technology to help tell the story about the Naval Special Warfare operators.
