Community members in South Brooklyn are condemning an act of hate toward an Asian-American senior citizen last month.
Police tell News 12 that a 90-year-old woman was approached by two men at 16th Avenue and 77th Street. They say the two men slapped her in the face and later lit her shirt on fire.
Community members gathered Monday to raise awareness of the incident that happened on July 17.
They are calling on the Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes to monitor the investigation. They are also requesting that the NYPD investigate the assault as a hate crime.
The two suspects remain at large. Councilmember Mark Treyger, along with community members, say they will not tolerate this behavior in their community.
